Hickory County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 8,940. Its county seat is Hermitage6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,066 km² (412 mi²). 1,032 km² (399 mi²) of it is land and 34 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.18% water.

There are 6,184 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.51% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,911 households out of which 22.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% are married couples living together, 6.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.70.
In the county the population is spread out with 19.90% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 19.10% from 25 to 44, 29.70% from 45 to 64, and 26.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
