Geography

Location of Healy, Alaska

Healy is located at 63°58'15" North, 149°7'37" West (63.970935, -149.126862)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1,733.7 km² (669.4 mi²). 1,732.8 km² (669.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Economy

Usibelli Coal Mine, Golden Valley Electric Association, the Denali Borough School District, and the National Park Service are the major employers in Healy. Proximity to Denali National Park & Preserve supports local RV parks, hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfast, and other small businesses.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,000 people, 436 households, and 245 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 0.6/km² (1.5/mi²). There are 604 housing units at an average density of 0.3/km² (0.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 90.20% White, 0.30% Black or African American, 2.30% Native American, 1.90% Asian, 0.70% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 3.80% from two or more races. 2.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 436 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 3.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.6% are non-families. 37.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 30.6% from 45 to 64, and 2.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 132.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 142.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $60,000, and the median income for a family is $77,806. Males have a median income of $65,729 versus $30,227 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $28,225. 4.9% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.9% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Climate

The climate of Healy is much like most of Interior Alaska, experiencing seasonal temperature extremes. Temperatures can be as low as -60°F in mid-winter, and as high as +85°F in the summer. Average January temperatures range from -22°F to -2°F. Average July temperatures range from +50°F to +72°F. The average annual precipitation is 11.3 inches.
