Harnett County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 91,025. Its county seat is Lillington6.

History
The county was formed in 1855 from Cumberland County. It was named for Cornelius Harnett (1723-1781), member of the Continental Congress and signer of the Articles of Confederation.
Law and government
Harnett County is a member of the regional Mid-Carolina Council of Governments.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,557 km² (601 mi²). 1,541 km² (595 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water.

The county is divided into thirteen townships: Anderson Creek, Averasboro, Barbecue, Black River, Buckhorn, Duke, Grove, Hectors Creek, Johnsonville, Lillington, Neills Creek, Stewarts Creek, and Upper Little River.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 91,025 people, 33,800 households, and 24,099 families residing in the county. The population density is 59/km² (153/mi²). There are 38,605 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (65/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.13% White, 22.50% Black or African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 3.21% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 5.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 33,800 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.20% are married couples living together, 13.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 10.60% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 19.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,105, and the median income for a family is $41,176. Males have a median income of $30,265 versus $22,283 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,775. 14.90% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.20% of those under the age of 18 and 19.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
