Hanover, New York

Hanover is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,638.

The Town of Hanover, incorporated in 1812, lies in the northeast corner of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 128.1 km² (49.5 mi²). 127.7 km² (49.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

On the north, the town borders Lake Erie and on the west, Cattaraugus Creek.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,638 people, 2,975 households, and 2,040 families residing in the town. The population density is 59.8/km² (154.9/mi²). There are 3,501 housing units at an average density of 27.4/km² (71.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.82% White, 0.48% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,975 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,567, and the median income for a family is $44,057. Males have a median income of $38,034 versus $22,754 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,654. 10.6% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Parcell Corners -- A location east of Nashville on Route 39.
  • Smith Mills -- A hamlet in the center of the town on Route 93.
  • Silver Creek -- The Village of Silver Creek, in the northeast corner of the town.
  • Sunset Bay -- A lakeside hamlet in the northeast part of the town.
