Hannibal (town), New York

Hannibal is a town located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,957. The name is derived from the hero of Carthage, Hannibal.

The Town of Hannibal contains a village also called Hannibal. The town is on the west border of the county.

History

Much of the region was purchased from the Onondaga and Oneida tribes to form the Central New York Military Tract to pay off war veterans. The town was formed in 1806 from the Town of Lysander while still part of Onondaga County, New York. The name was provided by Robert Harper, Secretary of State of New York, who is responsible form many of the "classical" names applied to political entities in the central part of New York.

Geography

The west town line is the border of Cayuga County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 116.0 km² (44.8 mi²). 116.0 km² (44.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,957 people, 1,760 households, and 1,307 families residing in the town. The population density is 42.7/km² (110.7/mi²). There are 1,962 housing units at an average density of 16.9/km² (43.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.00% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,760 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,278, and the median income for a family is $38,355. Males have a median income of $33,083 versus $23,667 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,344. 15.3% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.3% of those under the age of 18 and 17.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
