Hampton Bays is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 12,236.

Hampton Bays is in the Town of Southampton.

Geography

Hampton Bays is located at 40°52'26" North, 72°31'16" West (40.873940, -72.521167)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 56.2 km² (21.7 mi²). 31.2 km² (12.0 mi²) of it is land and 25.0 km² (9.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 44.46% water. Hampton Bays is crutial to Eastern Long Island. It contains Shinnecock Inlet, the eastern most inlet leading to the Atlantic Ocean, making it very popular for commercial fishing.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 12,236 people, 4,877 households, and 3,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 392.4/km² (1,016.1/mi²). There are 6,875 housing units at an average density of 220.5/km² (570.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 92.95% White, 0.87% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 3.69% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. 12.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,877 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $50,161, and the median income for a family is $58,773. Males have a median income of $47,633 versus $30,426 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $27,027. 10.7% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.9% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
