Hammond (town), New York

Hammond is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,207. The name is derived from early land owner Abijah Hammond.

The Town of Hammond is in the northwest corner of the county. There is also a village of Hammond in the town.

History

The town was formed in 1827 from parts of the Towns of Morristown and Rossie.

Geography

The north town line is the international border of Canada, defined by the St. Lawrence River, and the west town line is the border of Jefferson County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 201.8 km² (77.9 mi²). 161.1 km² (62.2 mi²) of it is land and 40.6 km² (15.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,207 people, 500 households, and 339 families residing in the town. The population density is 7.5/km² (19.4/mi²). There are 1,371 housing units at an average density of 8.5/km² (22.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.18% White, 0.50% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 0.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 500 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $25,313, and the median income for a family is $30,114. Males have a median income of $24,135 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,998. 19.0% of the population and 15.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.1% of those under the age of 18 and 19.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Cedar Island State Park -- A state park located on an island in the St. Lawrence River.
  • Chippawa Bay -- A bay of the St. Lawrence River.
  • Chippawa Bay -- A hamlet on the shore of Chippawa Bay, located on Route 12.
  • Eric Corner -- A location south of Chippawa Bay.
  • Hammond -- The Village of Hammond is in the northeast part of the town.
  • North Hammond -- A hamlet north of Hamlet village on Route 3.
  • Oak Island -- An island in the St. Lawerence River near Shermerhorn Landing.
  • Oak Point -- A hamlet on Route 12 along the shore of the St. Lawrence River. The community is located near a projections into the river called Briar Point.
  • Oakvale -- A location southeast of South Hammond.
  • Schermerhorn Landing -- A hamlet southwest of Chippawa Bay village on Route 12.
  • South Hammond -- A hamlet southwest of Hamlet village on Route 37.
