Halcyon

Variant of Alcyone, Halcyone.

  • Halcyon was a bird, now believed to have been the kingfisher. It was supposed to have a calming influence on the sea at the time of winter solstice. Folklore held that during the halcyon days, from seven days before the solstice until seven days after it, storms would not occur at sea. By extension, halcyon has come to mean the best period of one's life or career, or a period of great happiness.
  • Because it is associated with kingfishers, Halcyon is one of the genera of kingfishers.

  • Halcyon is a famous song by the English electronic music duo Orbital. The song is also known by the name Halcyon + On + On, or Halcyon & On & On. British eletronic musician Nick "Chicane" Bracegirdle" also has a hit and famous dancefloor filler by the name Halcyon,taken from his album Behind the Sun.


  • Halcion is a brand name of the drug Triazolam, which is used to treat insomnia.
