Groton (city), Connecticut

Groton is a city located in New London County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,010. Groton is the only remaining city in Connecticut which is not conterminous with its namesake town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.5 km² (6.7 mi²). 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 9.2 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 52.67% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,010 people, 4,230 households, and 2,444 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,211.6/km² (3,138.0/mi²). There are 4,569 housing units at an average density of 553.0/km² (1,432.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.72% White, 10.18% Black or African American, 0.93% Native American, 3.55% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.84% from other races, and 4.74% from two or more races. 7.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,230 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.2% are married couples living together, 17.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.77.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 15.7% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 111.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 113.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $40,515, and the median income for a family is $43,859. Males have a median income of $32,476 versus $28,510 for females. The per capita income for the city is $22,239. 9.9% of the population and 10.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
