It is derived from the Latin "Gregorius", which was from the late Greek name "Gregorios", which was from "gregoros" meaning "watchful, alert". Through folk etymology the name also became associated grex, gregis; �flock�, �herd�. Thus someone named Gregory was someone who watched after their flock. This is the reason that the name has been popular with monks, priests and popes. There have been sixteen popes with the name, starting with Gregory the Great. It is the second most popular name for popes (after John). Because of this background it is also a very common name for saints. Although the name was not that popular in the early 20th century, after the popularity of Gregory Peck it became a top 10 boys name in the 50's and has remained one of the most popular names for boys ever since.
