Greenwood is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 849.

The Town of Greenwood is located at the western border of the county. Greenwood was formed in 1827 from the Towns of Canisteo and Troupsburg.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 107.0 km² (41.3 mi²). 107.0 km² (41.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

The west town line is the border of Allegany County, New York. The west border is Town of Andover in Allegany County, and the east border is the Town of Jasper.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 849 people, 325 households, and 231 families residing in the town. The population density is 7.9/km² (20.6/mi²). There are 439 housing units at an average density of 4.1/km² (10.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.23% White, 0.24% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 0.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 325 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 104.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $29,750, and the median income for a family is $37,841. Males have a median income of $28,250 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,578. 19.5% of the population and 19.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.6% of those under the age of 18 and 16.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Rough and Ready -- A location on Route 248 near the south town line.
  • West Greenwood -- A hamlet on Route 417, west of Greenwood village.

The northern border is the Town of Hartsville, and the southern border is the Town of West Union. The west border is the Town of Andover in Allegany County, and the east border is the Town of Jasper.
