Greenport is a town located in Columbia County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,180.

The Town of Greenport is on the east border of the county and surrounds the City of Hudson on three sides.

History

The region was explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. The town was established in 1837.

Geography

The east town line is defined by the City of Hudson and the Hudson River, with Greene County, New York on the opposite shore.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 53.1 km² (20.5 mi²). 48.6 km² (18.8 mi²) of it is land and 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.39% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,180 people, 1,777 households, and 1,144 families residing in the town. The population density is 86.0/km² (222.7/mi²). There are 1,896 housing units at an average density of 39.0/km² (101.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.10% White, 5.10% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. 3.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,777 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,394, and the median income for a family is $47,452. Males have a median income of $35,250 versus $26,381 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,543. 10.3% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
