Greece (town), New York

Greece is a town located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 United States census, the town had a total population of 94,141. It is named after the country in Europe.

The Town of Greece is in the western part of the county and borders the City of Rochester on the east, the town of Gates on the south, the towns of Parma and Ogden on the west, and Lake Ontario on the north. The town is a contiguous suburb of Rochester. The area known as Charlotte, on the eastern border, was formerly part of the town until it was annexed by the City of Rochester in 1916.

History

The Town of Greece was established in 1822 from part of the Town of Gates and was previously called Northampton. The name Greece was selected because of the contemporary struggle of Greece for independence from Turkey.

The region that the town now occupies was originally settled by the Algonquin and Iroquois Native Americans in the 1300s. Eurpoean settlers began to arrive in the area in the 1790s.

Geography

Greece is located at 43^o 14' N latitude, 077^o 42' W longitude.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 133.0 km² (51.4 mi²). 122.8 km² (47.4 mi²) of it is land and 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.65% water.

The highest elevation in the town is located at Paddy Hill.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 94,141 people, 36,995 households, and 25,748 families residing in the town. The population density is 766.4/km² (1,985.0/mi²). There are 38,315 housing units at an average density of 311.9/km² (807.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.37% White, 2.88% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.49% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.87% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 2.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 36,995 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $48,355, and the median income for a family is $57,102. Males have a median income of $41,563 versus $29,864 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,614. 4.8% of the population and 3.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

School system

Greece's education system is managed by the Greece Central School District (http://www.greece.k12.ny.us). There are 12 elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools in the town. The school system currently has approximately 13,000 students.
