Gloversville, New York

Gloversville is a city located in Fulton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,413.

The City of Gloversville is located in the northern part of the Town of Johnstown. With the City of Johnstown, Gloversville is one of the "Twin Cities."

History

The location became a settlement for Puritans from New England at the end of the 18th Century. It earned its name for being the centre of the U.S. glove making industry for many years. It is still and important source of gloves, and glove making factories are its main industry.

Geography

Gloversville is located at 43°3'9" North, 74°20'34" West (43.052476, -74.342798)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²). 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.20% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 15,413 people, 6,500 households, and 3,828 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,169.2/km² (3,027.0/mi²). There are 7,540 housing units at an average density of 571.9/km² (1,480.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.37% White, 1.86% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 1.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,500 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% are married couples living together, 14.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,755, and the median income for a family is $34,713. Males have a median income of $27,109 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,207. 19.3% of the population and 14.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.6% of those under the age of 18 and 9.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
