Glendale, Colorado

Glendale is a city located in Arapahoe County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,547. The entire city is surrounded on all sides by the city of Denver. Its fire services will be provided by contract by the City and County of Denver starting in 2005.

Geography

Glendale is located at 39°42'9" North, 104°56'2" West (39.702546, -104.933866)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water (other than a short length of Cherry Creek which bisects the City from East to West. Much of the City's limited space is devoted to commercial development. It has both office and residental high rises.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,547 people, 2,630 households, and 715 families residing in the city. Almost all of the housing in the city is multi-family. The population density is 3,192.0/km² (8,241.3/mi²). There are 2,787 housing units at an average density of 1,956.5/km² (5,051.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.15% White, 9.70% African American, 0.86% Native American, 6.20% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 9.10% from other races, and 5.83% from two or more races. 27.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,630 households out of which 12.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 17.2% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 72.8% are non-families. 57.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.73 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 13.3% under the age of 18, 21.2% from 18 to 24, 50.4% from 25 to 44, 12.5% from 45 to 64, and 2.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 117.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,043, and the median income for a family is $29,521. Males have a median income of $27,674 versus $28,050 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,838. 17.2% of the population and 20.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Politics and Character

Glendale is remarkable for having its own political party, the Glendale Tea Party, which is associated, rightly or wrongly, with the several strip clubs found in the City. Local politics tend to revolve around those who support and those who oppose the Tea Party, and around homeowner's association politics which often overlap with City issues.

It is not unheard of for the city police to go door to door to locate jurors for proceedings of the City's municipal court.
