Gerry, New York

Gerry is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,054.

The Town of Gerry was incorporated in 1812 and is north of Jamestown, New York.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.7 km² (36.2 mi²). 93.7 km² (36.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,054 people, 661 households, and 499 families residing in the town. The population density is 21.9/km² (56.8/mi²). There are 739 housing units at an average density of 7.9/km² (20.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.44% White, 0.39% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 661 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.7% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% are non-families. 19.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 24.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,000, and the median income for a family is $36,853. Males have a median income of $28,750 versus $18,667 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,272. 12.8% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Cassadaga Creek -- A stream flowing southward through the western part of the town.
  • Kimball Stand -- A hamlet in the southwest corner of the town on Routes 44 and 60.
  • Gerry -- The hamlet of Gerry located on Routes 50, 60, and 65 east of Hatch Creek.
  • Hatch Creek -- A stream that flows into the Cassadaga Creek in the southwest corner of the town.
  • Sinclairville -- Part of the Village of Sinclairville.
