Georgetown is a city located in Georgetown County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,950. It is the county seat of Georgetown CountyTemplate:GR. It is a an important seaport on Winyah Bay at the confluence of the Great Pee Dee River, Waccamaw River, and Sampit River.

Georgetown is located at 33°22'3" North, 79°17'38" West (33.367434, -79.293807)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.6 km² (7.2 mi²). 16.9 km² (6.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.79% water.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,950 people, 3,411 households, and 2,305 families residing in the city. The population density is 528.4/km² (1,368.1/mi²). There are 3,856 housing units at an average density of 227.6/km² (589.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 40.99% White, 57.03% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 1.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,411 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.0% are married couples living together, 25.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,424, and the median income for a family is $34,747. Males have a median income of $27,545 versus $19,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,568. 24.1% of the population and 19.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.9% of those under the age of 18 and 16.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
