The Charter Township of Garfield is a charter township in Grand Traverse County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 13,840.
The township is adjacent to Traverse City on the southwest, and the city has incorporated much of land that was formerly part of the township. Much of the remaining township is considered to be a part of the city's urban area.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 71.7 km² (27.7 mi²). 69.1 km² (26.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.54% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,840 people, 5,745 households, and 3,544 families residing in the township. The population density is 200.2/km² (518.5/mi²). There are 6,150 housing units at an average density of 89.0/km² (230.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.34% White, 0.33% African American, 1.01% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,745 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 82.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.2 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $37,472, and the median income for a family is $50,307. Males have a median income of $36,002 versus $24,421 for females. The per capita income for the township is $22,142. 6.0% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
