Gainesville is a village located in Wyoming County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 304.

The Village of Gainesville was incorporated in 1902 and lies within the boundaries of the Town of Gainsville. The village is on Route 19, south of Route 78.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 304 people, 113 households, and 87 families residing in the village. The population density is 138.1/km² (356.8/mi²). There are 122 housing units at an average density of 55.4 persons/km² (143.2 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.67% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 113 households out of which 44.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 23.0% are non-families. 16.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the village the population is spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 104.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $31,875, and the median income for a family is $30,500. Males have a median income of $33,571 versus $18,000 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,385. 7.4% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.7% are under the age of 18 and 0.0% are 65 or older.
