Gahanna is a city located in Franklin County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 32,636.

Gahanna is located at 40°1'36" North, 82°52'9" West (40.026713, -82.869131)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.1 km² (12.4 mi²). 32.1 km² (12.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 32,636 people, 11,990 households, and 8,932 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,016.2/km² (2,632.8/mi²). There are 12,390 housing units at an average density of 385.8/km² (999.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.46% White, 8.14% African American, 0.20% Native American, 3.25% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,990 households out of which 40.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 20.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $66,031, and the median income for a family is $74,260. Males have a median income of $51,391 versus $35,922 for females. The per capita income for the city is $29,040. 3.7% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Gahanna Plantation was founded by John Clark of Ross County, Ohio as an 800 acre (3.2 km²) farm. Its population grew over time, and it was incorporated in 1881. The first mayor of Gahanna was L. John Neiswander. According to the Gahanna Historical Society, the community was not named for the Biblical Gehenna, but from a local Native American word describing the meeting of three creeks, as the community is located at the confluence of branches of Big Walnut Creek, once called Gahanna Creek.
