Plot: G.I. Jane stars Demi Moore as Lt. O'Neil, a naval intelligence officer who is picked to undergo a certain special forces training involving a combination of Navy SEALs and Marine Force Recon training. Viggo Mortensen plays the unforgiving head instructor, a Master Chief who spends his time reading poetry and scuba diving in between kicking trainees into shape. The plot mostly revolves around the instructors beating up the candidates, with a secondary plot about senators and the closing of bases coming in so often to make it seem as if this movie is deep, only to flash back to Demi Moore doing push-ups and never giving up, even when her male counterparts want to.
The Poem: The Master Chief's poem is by D.H. Lawrence, entitled "Self-Pity."
