Friendship, New York

Friendship is a town located in Allegany County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,927. The town's name was adopted to mark the resolution of earlier conflicts.

The Town of Friendship is near the center of Allegany County.

History

The region was first settled around 1806. Originally, the town gained the name of "Fighting Corners" due to the high incidence of feuding. The Town of Friendship was incorporated in 1815 from part of the Town of Caneadea.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.8 km² (36.2 mi²). 93.8 km² (36.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) passes across the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,927 people, 770 households, and 514 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.5/km² (53.2/mi²). There are 994 housing units at an average density of 10.6/km² (27.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.57% White, 1.87% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 770 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,439, and the median income for a family is $33,542. Males have a median income of $26,440 versus $22,132 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,552. 21.5% of the population and 17.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Friendship

  • Friendship -- The hamlet of Friendship is in the center of the town and is next to the Southern Tier Expressway and Van Campen Creek. Routes 17, 20, 31, and 275 converge in the village.
  • Higgins -- A location near the east town line on Route 20.
  • Nile -- A hamlet near the south town line on Route 275, south of Friendship.
  • Van Campen Creek -- The stream flows through the town toward the Genesee River.
