Frenchtown Charter Township, Michigan

Frenchtown Charter Township is a charter township located in Monroe County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 20,777.

Geography

The township is bounded on the east by Lake Erie, on the south by the city of Monroe and Monroe Charter Township, on the west by Raisinville Township, on the north by Ash Township and on the northeast by Berlin Charter Township. A small discontiguous area in the Plum Creek Bay Wildlife Area on a peninsula southeast of Monroe is also part of the township. Sterling State Park is in the southeast part of the township adjacent to Monroe.

Three highways traverse the township from southwest to northeast: I-75 is closest to Lake Erie, US-24 is furthest from the lake and M-125 is between I-75 and US-24 in the south until its northern terminus at a junction with US-24 in the north of the township. M-50 enters the township from the west and ends at a junction with I-75. I-275 has its southern terminus with I-75 on the northern boundary of the township.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 112.0 km² (43.2 mi²). 109.1 km² (42.1 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.66% water. The River Rasin forms the southern boundary of the township with Monroe Charter Township.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,777 people, 7,733 households, and 5,598 families residing in the township. The population density is 190.5/km² (493.4/mi²). There are 8,244 housing units at an average density of 75.6/km² (195.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.51% White, 1.59% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 2.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,733 households out of which 35.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the township the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $47,699, and the median income for a family is $54,032. Males have a median income of $44,338 versus $25,787 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,335. 7.0% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
