Franklin, North Carolina

Franklin is an incorporated town located in Franklin Township in Macon County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,490. It is the county seat of Macon CountyTemplate:GR.

The Macon County Airport is located in the Iotla Valley, just north of Franklin, and reports ASOS weather station information as "Franklin" at :00, :20, and :40 past each hour. [1] (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/obhistory/K1A5.html)

Franklin is located at 35°10'52" North, 83°22'54" West (35.181144, -83.381685)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.0 km˛ (3.9 mi˛). 9.9 km˛ (3.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.78% water.

The Cullasaja River from Highlands flows into the Little Tennessee River in Franklin.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,490 people, 1,627 households, and 899 families residing in the town. The population density is 351.8/km˛ (911.2/mi˛). There are 1,916 housing units at an average density of 193.2/km˛ (500.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 95.42% White, 1.98% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 3.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,627 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.7% are non-families. 40.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 23.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 79.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $21,534, and the median income for a family is $30,426. Males have a median income of $25,066 versus $18,472 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,129. 20.9% of the population and 15.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.4% of those under the age of 18 and 16.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
