Franklin is a town located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,197.

The Town of Franklin was founded in 1836. It lies in the Adirondack Region of New York State. Franklin is in the southeast part of the county.

History

The first settlement was Franklin Falls in 1827. This community was burned in 1852 and never rebuilt.

Geography

The Town of Franklin is the third largest town in the county. The town is in the Adirondack State Park. The east town line is the border of Clinton County, New York and the south town line is the border of Essex County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 453.8 km² (175.2 mi²). 440.9 km² (170.2 mi²) of it is land and 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.84% water.

The Saranac River flows through the southeast corner of the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,197 people, 473 households, and 324 families residing in the town. The population density is 2.7/km² (7.0/mi²). There are 982 housing units at an average density of 2.2/km² (5.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.08% White, 0.50% African American, 1.34% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 473 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,598, and the median income for a family is $46,250. Males have a median income of $32,000 versus $23,472 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,955. 7.3% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Loon Lake -- a lake in the central part of the town.
  • Loon Lake -- A hamlet on the east side of Loon Lake, located on Route 99.
  • Merrillsville -- A hamlet southeast of Loon Lake on Route 99.
  • Molasses Corners -- A hamlet on the north side of Loon Lake on Route 99.
  • Onchiota -- A location in the southwest part of the town.
  • Rainbow Lake -- A lake partly in the west side of the town.
  • Sugarbush -- A hamlet on Route 3 near the east town line.
  • Union Falls Pond -- A lake north of Franklin Falls in the southeast part of the town.
  • Vermontsville -- This hamlet is seat of the town government. It is located near the south town line on Route 3.
  • White Fathers -- A hamlet south of Loon Lake, located on Lke Kushaqua.
