Fowler is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,180.

The Town of Fowler is located on the southwest border of the county.

History

The Hollow Dam on the West Branch of the Oswegatchie River was constructed in 1987 and generates 900 kilowatts of power.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Jefferson County and Lewis County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 157.2 km² (60.7 mi²). 154.2 km² (59.5 mi²) of it is land and 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.94% water.

The Oswegatchie River flows across the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,180 people, 811 households, and 616 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.1/km² (36.6/mi²). There are 1,020 housing units at an average density of 6.6/km² (17.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.27% White, 0.09% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 811 households out of which 37.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% are non-families. 19.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,844, and the median income for a family is $38,750. Males have a median income of $32,339 versus $20,521 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,322. 12.0% of the population and 9.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Balmat -- A hamlet south of Fowler village on Routes 24 and 812.
  • Fowler -- The hamlet of Fowler is centrally located in the town and is at the junction of Routes 52 and 812.
  • Emeryville -- A hamlet northeast of Fowler village on the bank of the Oswegatchie River.
  • Fullerville -- A hamlet northeast of Balmat on Route 24.
  • Hallesboro -- A hamlet in the northwest corner of the town.
  • Kellog Corners -- A locations southwest of Balmat on Route 24.
  • Piles Corner -- A hamlet at the west town line.
  • Sylvia Lake -- A lake west of Balmat.
  • West Fowler -- A hamlet west of Fowler village on Route 22.
