Fort Totten is a census-designated place located in Benson County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 952.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 20.4 km² (7.9 mi²). 19.9 km² (7.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.54% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 952 people, 230 households, and 200 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 47.9/km² (124.2/mi²). There are 255 housing units at an average density of 12.8/km² (33.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 0.84% White, 0.11% African American, 98.84% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 230 households out of which 54.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.7% are married couples living together, 43.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 13.0% are non-families. 10.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.14 and the average family size is 4.23.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 49.4% under the age of 18, 11.8% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 12.1% from 45 to 64, and 2.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 18 years. For every 100 females there are 103.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $15,395, and the median income for a family is $15,774. Males have a median income of $20,179 versus $19,063 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $5,165. 53.0% of the population and 51.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 57.8% of those under the age of 18 and 50.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
