Fort Defiance (Navajo: Tséhootsooí) is a census-designated place located in Apache County, Arizona, USA. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 4,061.
Geography
Fort Defiance is located at 35°44'31" North, 109°4'0" West (35.742032, -109.066739)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.7 km² (6.1 mi²). 15.7 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,061 people, 1,115 households, and 890 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 258.3/km² (669.3/mi²). There are 1,321 housing units at an average density of 84.0/km² (217.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 4.53% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 92.86% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.90% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,115 households out of which 49.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 30.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.61 and the average family size is 4.15.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 40.0% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
