Forestburg (or Forestburgh) is a town located in Sullivan County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 833.

The Town of Forestburg is in the south-central part of the county.

History

The town was formed from parts of the Towns of Mamakating and Thompson in 1837.

Geography

Part of the south town line is the border of Orange County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 147.1 km² (56.8 mi²). 143.0 km² (55.2 mi²) of it is land and 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.83% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 833 people, 327 households, and 222 families residing in the town. The population density is 5.8/km² (15.1/mi²). There are 500 housing units at an average density of 3.5/km² (9.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.68% White, 2.04% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.68% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 4.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 327 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 26.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $56,125, and the median income for a family is $60,139. Males have a median income of $37,500 versus $35,347 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,864. 7.0% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Philwold -- A hamlet northeast of Forestburg village.
  • St. Josephs -- A hamlet north of Forestburg village by "St. Josephs Lake."
  • Squirrels Corner -- A hamlet north of Forestburg on Route 45.
