Ford City, Pennsylvania

Ford City is a borough located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,451. It was founded as a company town in 1887 by John Baptist Ford (1811-1903) to house Works No. 3 of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, now known as PPG Industries.

Ford City is located at 40°46'17" North, 79°31'48" West (40.771410, -79.529906)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.13% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,451 people, 1,580 households, and 935 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,876.7/km² (4,864.8/mi²). There are 1,713 housing units at an average density of 931.5/km² (2,414.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 94.38% White, 3.88% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,580 households out of which 25.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% are non-families. 37.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the borough the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 25.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $24,457, and the median income for a family is $30,843. Males have a median income of $28,438 versus $21,919 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $14,318. 13.4% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
