Eureka is a town located in Lincoln County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,017.

Eureka is located at 48°52'49" North, 115°2'58" West (48.880265, -115.049325)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Eureka is located on the Tobacco River in an area known as the Tobacco Valley or the Tobacco Plains. Eureka was founded in the early 1900's as settlers moved north from Kalispell and Missoula and south from Canada, and was originally known as Deweyville. The Canadian fur-trapper and explorer David Thompson visited the Tobacco Valley in the early 1800's during his searches for a route to the Pacific Ocean. Eureka is home of Lincoln County High School and the Lincoln County Fair every August. Eureka was once known as "The Christmas Tree Capitol of the World".

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,017 people, 431 households, and 252 families residing in the town. The population density is 388.8/km² (1,008.6/mi²). There are 494 housing units at an average density of 188.8/km² (489.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.76% White, 0.00% African American, 1.28% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 431 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.3% are non-families. 35.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $27,120, and the median income for a family is $30,268. Males have a median income of $31,731 versus $18,214 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,619. 22.9% of the population and 19.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
