Essex, New York

Essex is a town located in Essex County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 713.

The Town of Essex is on the eastern edge of the county.

History

The region was first settled in 1765. The town was formed from a part of the Town of Willsboro in 1805. It was an important shipbuilding location, but that economy collapsed after 1849 with the beginning of railroad lines in the region.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 97.3 km² (37.6 mi²). 82.1 km² (31.7 mi²) of it is land and 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.62% water.

The Town of Essex borders Lake Champlain and the state of Vermont.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 713 people, 302 households, and 202 families residing in the town. The population density is 8.7/km² (22.5/mi²). There are 522 housing units at an average density of 6.4/km² (16.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.72% White, 0.00% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.14% from two or more races. 0.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 302 households out of which 24.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 105.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,596, and the median income for a family is $40,104. Males have a median income of $26,905 versus $19,583 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,087. 11.0% of the population and 10.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.1% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Essex

  • Boquet River -- A small stream flowing northward on the east side of the town.
  • Bouquet -- A hamlet on Route 22 west of Essex.
  • Craterclub -- A hamlet on the shore of Lake Champlain, south of Essex.
  • Essex -- The hamlet of Essex on the shore of Lake Champlain at the junction of Routes 22 and 9. The village is the location of the town government and is a ferry port to Vermont.
  • Essex Station -- A location west of Essex on Route 22.
  • Split Rock Point -- The easternmost extension of the town into Lake Champlain.
  • Whallonsburg -- A hamlet in the south part of the town on Route 22.
