Englewood is a town located in McMinn County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,590.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,590 people, 670 households, and 456 families residing in the town. The population density is 361.1/km² (934.4/mi²). There are 760 housing units at an average density of 172.6/km² (446.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.67% White, 0.06% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 670 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $24,000, and the median income for a family is $29,792. Males have a median income of $29,000 versus $22,583 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,752. 20.1% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.7% of those under the age of 18 and 14.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Corruption in the 1970s and misc information of interest

Many never want to see their towns as a source of the negative, but problems arrise from time to time that shine an bad light upon the heart of a community. During the 1970s, Englewood TN experienced problems with police corruption due to drug trafficing via 411 Highway. Federal Agents were forced to come in, and deal with the issue. Rumours had it that at this time Englewood was the 2nd biggest drug trafficing town in the country next to Miami, FL. Also, like many small towns Englewood was known for having police force that ticketed heavily those passing through their town. Englewood also had problems with racism in the past. Englewood is experiencing a very mild growth due to the expansion of 411 Highway to 4 lanes.
