Elmira (town), New York

Elmira is a town located in Chemung County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,199.

The Town of Elmira is in the south-central part of the county, surrounding the City of Elmira on three sides.

History

The Town of Elmira was formed from the Town of Chemung in 1794 as the Town of Newtown. In 1808 the town changed its name to Elmira.

Geography

The Chemung River forms part of the south town line, and the Southern Tier Expressway (N.Y. Route 17) passes through the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 58.5 km² (22.6 mi²). 57.7 km² (22.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.24% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,199 people, 3,019 households, and 2,049 families residing in the town. The population density is 124.7/km² (323.0/mi²). There are 3,183 housing units at an average density of 55.1/km² (142.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.31% White, 1.49% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,019 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $46,641, and the median income for a family is $56,772. Males have a median income of $37,676 versus $29,473 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,335. 5.5% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
