Ellsworth is a city located in Hancock County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,456. It is the county seat of Hancock CountyTemplate:GR.

Geography

Ellsworth is located at 44°34'20" North, 68°28'34" West (44.572223, -68.476039)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 243.0 km² (93.8 mi²). 205.3 km² (79.2 mi²) of it is land and 37.7 km² (14.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.53% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,456 people, 2,755 households, and 1,782 families residing in the city. The population density is 31.5/km² (81.5/mi²). There are 3,442 housing units at an average density of 16.8/km² (43.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.79% White, 0.19% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,755 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.75.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,938, and the median income for a family is $41,884. Males have a median income of $31,455 versus $22,188 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,049. 9.2% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Activities

Ellsworth, as a tourist town, has much to offer visitors in the way of sights and shops. Teenagers, as well as adults who like a faster lifestyle, may fare better in Bangor or Portland.
