Ellsworth, Kansas

Ellsworth is a city located in Ellsworth County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,965. It is the county seat of Ellsworth CountyTemplate:GR.

The city is named for Fort Ellsworth, which was built in 1864. Due to speculation on imminent railroad construction, the population of Ellsworth boomed to over two thousand by the time it was incorporated in 1867.

Today, the largest employer in Ellsworth is the Kansas State Ellsworth Correctional Facility. Ellsworth also has a local newspaper, the Ellsworth County Independent/Reporter.

Ellsworth is located at 38°43'55" North, 98°13'45" West (38.731924, -98.229204)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,965 people, 995 households, and 641 families residing in the city. The population density is 545.1/km² (1,413.3/mi²). There are 1,141 housing units at an average density of 209.8/km² (543.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.40% White, 7.55% African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. 3.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 995 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the city the population is spread out with 17.3% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 132.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 139.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,625, and the median income for a family is $45,156. Males have a median income of $30,233 versus $19,762 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,396. 7.1% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
