Ellisburg (town), New York

Ellisburg (also called Ellisburgh) is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,541. The town is named after early landowners.

The Town of Ellisburg contains a village also called Ellisburg. The town is in the southwestern corner of the county.

History

The town land was purchased by Marvel and Lyman Ellis. The town was organized in 1803 from the Town of Mexico before the creation of the county.

In 1814 during the War of 1812, a British invasion force was defeated at the Battle of Big Sandy Creek.

Geography

The western boundary of Ellisburg is Lake Ontario, and the south town line is the border of Oswego County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 224.3 km² (86.6 mi²). 220.8 km² (85.3 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.55% water.

Interstate 81 passes through the east side of the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,541 people, 1,269 households, and 961 families residing in the town. The population density is 16.0/km² (41.5/mi²). There are 1,781 housing units at an average density of 8.1/km² (20.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.85% White, 0.40% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,269 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.3% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,112, and the median income for a family is $40,903. Males have a median income of $31,184 versus $23,162 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,102. 13.6% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.3% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Ellisburg -- The Village of Ellisburg, near the center of the town.
  • Mannsville -- The Village of Mannsville in the southeast part of the town.
  • Giddingsville -- A hamlet on US Route 11 in the northeast part of the town.
  • Hammond Corners -- A location at the junction of Routes 75 and 78.
  • Hossington -- A hamlet near the north town line.
  • Jefferson Park -- A lakeside hamlet northwest of Ellisburg village.
  • Montario Point -- A lakeside hamlet in the southwest corner of the town.
  • North Landing -- A hamlet on Route 3 west of Ellisburg village.
  • Pierpont Manor -- A hamlet east of Ellisburg village on US Route 11 first settled around 1805.
  • Rural Hill -- A location in the northwest part of the town named after early settlers, the Hill brothers.
  • Sandy Creek -- A stream flowing southwest through the town past Belleville, Hossington, and Woodville.
  • Saxe Corners -- A hamlet northeast of Ellisburg village.
  • South Landing -- A hamlet southwest of Ellisburg village on Route 3.
  • Southwick Beach State Park -- A state park on the shore of Lake Ontario.
  • Taylor Settlement -- A hamlet in the northeast part of the town.
  • Wardwell Settlement ( or Wardwell) -- A hamlet in the northeast part of the town, named after landowner Colonel Wardwell.
  • Woodville -- A hamlet northwest of Ellisburg village and located on the north branch of Sandy Creek. The community was originally called "Wood's Settlement" after an early pioneer family.
