Elbridge (town), New York

Elbridge is a town located in Onondaga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,091. The town is named after Elbridge Gerry, a Vice President of the United States.

The Town of Elbridge was formed in 1829 from the Town of Camillus. Elbridge is also the name of a village is in this town. The town is on the west border of the county.

Geography

The west town line is the border of Cayuga County, New York. The Erie Canal defines part f the border of the town and the New York State Thruway crosses the north part of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 99.2 km² (38.3 mi²). 97.3 km² (37.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,091 people, 2,322 households, and 1,688 families residing in the town. The population density is 62.6/km² (162.1/mi²). There are 2,513 housing units at an average density of 25.8/km² (66.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.70% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,322 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,444, and the median income for a family is $48,085. Males have a median income of $35,989 versus $25,763 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,682. 6.9% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
