History

Egg Harbor City was founded in 1854 by German-Americans in Philadelphia as a refuge for those being persecuted in the anti-immigrant violence known as the Know-Nothing movement. It remained an island of German language and culture in South Jersey for more than 50 years. See 'External Links' below for a site that has the most extensive history of this town.

Geography

Egg Harbor City is located at 39°32'60" North, 74°37'3" West (39.549881, -74.617501)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.9 km² (11.5 mi²). 28.8 km² (11.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.73% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,545 people, 1,658 households, and 1,150 families residing in the city. The population density is 158.0/km² (409.2/mi²). There are 1,770 housing units at an average density of 61.5/km² (159.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 66.80% White, 14.19% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 13.49% from other races, and 3.81% from two or more races. 24.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,658 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% are married couples living together, 20.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 24.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,956, and the median income for a family is $40,040. Males have a median income of $27,978 versus $23,560 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,151. 13.1% of the population and 11.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.5% of those under the age of 18 and 15.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
