Eenadu (meaning "Today" in Telugu) was founded by the Indian media baron Ramoji Rao in 1974. It has played a role in both crowning or dethroning governments in Andhra Pradesh. It has also successfully adapted the latest publishing and communication technologies into the Telugu language. Eenadu's rapid expansion enabled diversification of its portfolio by venturing into numerous other markets such as finance and chitfund (Margadarsi), foods (Priya Foods), film production (Usha Kiron Films), film distribution (Mayuri Films), and a group of television channels (ETV).

History

Eenadu is a Telugu newspaper publication company found in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in 1974 by Ramoji Rao. Eenadu, meaning today in Telugu language, was primarily conceived for Telugu people. After an initial struggle with rival newspaper publications, Eenadu managed to capture the public eye by differentiating its news, facts and media presentation techniques. Eenadu claims that the very concept of 'investigative journalism' was popularized in Andhra through its news columns and publications. It gained immense popularity amongst readers - "Eenadu was there before the sun!" This was time when print media was "the" primary source of daily news and current affairs. Few could afford a television in the 1970s - was classified as a luxury item. Besides, there was only one broadcasting television network, Dooradarshan.

Early Days

Like any other publications, Eenadu too did have its share of struggles. When launched in Vishapatnam, it wasn't able to sell more than 3,000 copies a week. Eenadu found itself struggling to become a daily publication ranked amongst other popular rival publications.

By 1975, Eenadu managed to achieve its target of becoming a daily publication. However, it was popular in regions and rivalry was still an issue. A period where the company needed vision to drive and expand it any further. Eenadu hired a new set of directors to be part of its key decision and management group which drove it towards what it is today.
