Edwards County (standard abbreviation: ED) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 3,449. The county seat is at Kinsley.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,611 km² (622 mi²). 1,611 km² (622 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.01% water.

Geographic Features

The Arkansas River flows through Edwards County from the southwest corner to the Pawnee County line near U.S. Highway 56. Since the early 1990s, however, the riverbed has contained little to no water, and can be waded across in most places.

Major Highways

Three U.S. Highways run through Edwards County, all meeting in Kinsley. An east-west route, U.S. Highway 50 circumvents Belpre and Lewis before joining with westbound U.S. Highway 56 in Kinsley. The single road then passes through Offerle and west into Ford County. U.S. Highway 183 runs from Kiowa County in the South to Kinsley, where it joins eastbound U.S. 56, running as a single highway to Panwee County. Kansas Highway K-19 starts at U.S. Highway 50 near Belpre, and travels North into Pawnee County.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,449 people, 1,455 households, and 955 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 1,754 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.52% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 5.57% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 9.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,455 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.30% are married couples living together, 6.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.30% are non-families. 32.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 20.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,530, and the median income for a family is $38,250. Males have a median income of $27,050 versus $20,132 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,586. 10.40% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.40% of those under the age of 18 and 8.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
