Eaton is a city located in Preble County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,133. It is the county seat of Preble CountyTemplate:GR.

Eaton is located at 39°44'51" North, 84°38'2" West (39.747603, -84.633818)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.18% is water.

The city includes the majestic Crystal Lake and Seven Mile Creek. Parks include: Fort St. Clair, Water Works Park.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,133 people, 3,274 households, and 2,183 families residing in the city. The population density is 553.8/km² (1,434.2/mi²). There are 3,467 housing units at an average density of 236.1/km² (611.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.02% White, 0.39% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,274 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,231, and the median income for a family is $42,241. Males have a median income of $32,404 versus $24,006 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,771. 8.7% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • The most famous resident of Eaton was Andrew L. Harris, a hero at Gettysburg and the last General of the Civil War to serve as a Governor.
  • Birthplace of William Stephens former mayor of Los Angeles, governor of California 1917-1923 (b.1859 - d.1944).
  • Kent Vosler, Olympic Diver (1976, 4th place)

Eaton also hosts a yearly Pork Festival in September which attracts many craft lovers and pork aficionados.

Eaton's school mascot is the Fighting Eagles, and the colors are purple and gold.

Eaton has both a Big K-Mart and a Wal-Mart.

Eaton is the local area focus of a community website portal called http://www.eatonlink.com through which the local political power structure has been weakened by the unauthorized dissemination of information to the people at large. EatonLink and its founders are significantly hated by many people for daring to give common people the ability to communicate issues and information. <--- That might be a bit of an exaggeration...
