East Pittsburgh is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,017.

Geography

East Pittsburgh is located at 40°23'49" North, 79°50'24" West (40.396969, -79.839869)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,017 people, 936 households, and 496 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,996.8/km² (5,163.5/mi²). There are 1,107 housing units at an average density of 1,095.9/km² (2,833.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 76.10% White, 20.92% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 2.18% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 936 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.7% are married couples living together, 21.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.0% are non-families. 43.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the borough the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 78.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $21,286, and the median income for a family is $32,037. Males have a median income of $26,512 versus $23,050 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $13,391. 22.0% of the population and 17.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.0% of those under the age of 18 and 10.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The first transmission from pioneer station KDKA AM was made from East Pittsburgh.
