Dresden is a town located in Washington County, New York in the USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 677.

The Town of Dresden is in the north part of the county.

History

The town was first settled in 1784. The early industries included lumbering and maple syrup preparation.

Geography

The west town line is defined by Lake George with Warren County, New York on the opposite shore. The east town line, partly defined by Lake Champlain, is Vermont and the lake named South Bay. The town is inside the Adirondack State Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 142.5 km² (55.0 mi²). 138.2 km² (53.4 mi²) of it is land and 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.98% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 677 people, 274 households, and 203 families residing in the town. The population density is 4.9/km² (12.7/mi²). There are 630 housing units at an average density of 4.6/km² (11.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.26% White, 0.15% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 274 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% are non-families. 22.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $29,868, and the median income for a family is $39,583. Males have a median income of $25,625 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,346. 9.0% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Dresden -- The hamlet of Dresden, located in the northeast part of the town on Route 22. Dresden in located on the west shore of the south arm of Lake Champlain.
  • Dresden Station -- A location southwest of Dresden.
  • Hulletts Landing -- A hamlet on Lake George in the southwest part of the town.
