Dover, New York

Dover is a town located in Dutchess County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,565.

The Town of Dover is located on the eastern boundary of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1807 from part of the Town of Pawling.

Geography

The east town line is the border of Connecticut.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 145.9 km² (56.3 mi²). 144.3 km² (55.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.14% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,565 people, 3,034 households, and 2,157 families residing in the town. The population density is 59.4/km² (153.8/mi²). There are 3,266 housing units at an average density of 22.6/km² (58.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.71% White, 5.50% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.52% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 5.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,034 households out of which 38.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 106.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $50,361, and the median income for a family is $57,979. Males have a median income of $40,885 versus $28,542 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,250. 8.4% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.6% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The population in 1890 was 1,863.

  • Webatuck -- A hamlet in the south central part of the town on Route 55.
  • Wiley Shelter -- A location southwest of Wingdale.
  • Wingdale -- A hamlet in the south part of the town on Route 22.
