Douglas County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 92,174. The county's explosive growth is evident with a population of 107,217 according to the 2004 U.S. Census Estimate. The county's county seat is Douglasville, Georgia6.

This county is a part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.

History

Name

Douglas County was named after Stephen Douglas, an Illinois senator who lost against Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election of 1860.

Geography

Area

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 519 km² (200 mi²). 516 km² (199 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.48% water.

Parks

Sweetwater Creek State Park, located in Douglas County, is host to the ruins of a Civil War-era mill destroyed in General Sherman's campaign through Georgia.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 92,174 people, 32,822 households, and 24,911 families residing in the county. The population density is 179/km² (462/mi²). There are 34,825 housing units at an average density of 67/km² (175/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.28% White, 18.51% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.22% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 2.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 32,822 households out of which 38.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.90% are married couples living together, 12.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.10% are non-families. 18.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.60% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 33.50% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 7.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $50,108, and the median income for a family is $54,082. Males have a median income of $38,204 versus $28,475 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,172. 7.80% of the population and 5.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.90% of those under the age of 18 and 7.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
