Doric Greek
From Academic Kids
Doric Greek is an ancient dialect of the Greek language, spoken in classical times in large parts of the Peloponnese, plus Crete and Rhodes.
It preserves long a (alpha) where other dialects change it to long open e (eta, pronounced as in the English word hat), as in Template:Polytonic (gā mātēr) "earth mother" — Attic and Koine Template:Polytonic (gē mētēr), and preserves original Template:Polytonic (-ti) endings that Attic changed to Template:Polytonic (-si) for instance in the third person plural ending Template:Polytonic (-onti) — Attic/Koine Template:Polytonic (-ousi).
The Doric dialect has given its name to the "Doric" variety of Lowland Scots.
