Dora is a city located in Walker County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 2,413.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²). 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,413 people, 984 households, and 711 families residing in the city. The population density is 123.6/km² (319.9/mi²). There are 1,080 housing units at an average density of 55.3/km² (143.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.61% White, 16.66% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 984 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% are married couples living together, 18.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $21,458, and the median income for a family is $29,000. Males have a median income of $28,942 versus $19,886 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,560. 27.9% of the population and 23.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.0% of those under the age of 18 and 23.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
