Dickinson is a town located in Broome County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,335.

The Town of Dickinson was established in 1890 from the Town of Chenango. It is the smallest town in Broome County.

Geography

The town is at the north city line of Binghamton, New York. The Chenango River divides the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.44% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,335 people, 1,980 households, and 1,219 families residing in the town. The population density is 430.0/km² (1,114.8/mi²). There are 2,131 housing units at an average density of 171.8/km² (445.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.27% White, 4.20% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 1.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,980 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,996, and the median income for a family is $49,583. Males have a median income of $33,654 versus $25,699 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,246. 7.2% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
