Devils Lake is a city located in Ramsey County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,222. It is the county seat of Ramsey CountyTemplate:GR. It is named after Devils Lake.

The local paper is the Devils Lake Journal. Devils Lake Municipal Airport serves the city.

Lake Region State College is a 2-year public college in Devils Lake.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.3 km² (6.3 mi²). 16.3 km² (6.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.16% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,222 people, 3,127 households, and 1,773 families residing in the city. The population density is 444.0/km² (1,149.4/mi²). There are 3,508 housing units at an average density of 215.7/km² (558.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.23% White, 0.22% African American, 7.84% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The top 6 ancestry groups in the city are German (43.9%), Norwegian (33.4%), Irish (7.6%), French (4.7%), Swedish (4.5%), English (2.7%).

There are 3,127 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.3% are non-families. 37.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,250, and the median income for a family is $39,541. Males have a median income of $27,972 versus $18,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,741. 16.1% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.7% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
